CC&S's Deborah McKoy and Jeff Vincent present on creating "Opportunity-Rich Schools and Sustainable Communities" to the City of Edmonton's mayor's task force on community sustainability . The task force is working on strategies to revive 100 neighbourhoods built before 1971, many of which have seen sharp declines in the number of households with children. As a result, Edmonton's two school districts have looked to close schools serving these neighborhoods. Last fall, the public school board put a two-year moratorium on school closures and this year voted to delay new school construction, while community leaders in the task force investigate options to ensure neighborhood and school quality amidst community change.

The Green Schools Initiative and the UC Berkeley Center for Cities & Schools are awarded a UC Berkeley Chancellor's Community Partnership Fund grant to pilot the new model Green Star Schools certification program in Berkeley and engage elementary school students in a service-learning program to "green" their school by reducing waste, pollution, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The Chancellor's Community Partnership Fund supports partnerships between local community members and University of California, Berkeley, students, faculty and staff to improve public safety, work to close the achievement gap, and help protect the environment in the city of Berkeley.
Deborah Moore, executive director of the Green Schools Initiative, said, “This grant supports our partnership with students, faculty and staff at the UC Berkeley Center for Cities & Schools that will help us pilot test a new model Green Star Schools 'certification program' in Berkeley schools, which will ultimately be replicated across Bay Area schools. Center wins $40,000 Berkeley Research Futures Grant from UC Vice Chancellor of Research
This is a unique initiative led by the Dean of the Graduate School of Education David Pearson, the Dean College of Environmental Design Harrison Fraker and Center Director Deborah McKoy. Funding from the Berkeley Futures Grant will allow the new Center for Cities and Schools to bring faculty together from the departments of City and Regional Planning, Environmental and Landscape Design, and Architecture located at the College of Environmental Design, together with faculty from the Graduate School of Education as well as other departments such as Public Policy, Public Health and the Haas School of Business to collaborate on research, policy, and publications.
CC&S’s specific efforts include:
  1. Hold a new symposium series at UC Berkeley in 2005 – 2006 to bring together national leaders seeking to create a shared vision about the research questions and focus areas for future health of cities and public schools.
  2. Begin the formation of two new fields of study in both CED and GSE allowing planning and design students to specialize in education and education students to develop a specialty in planning and/or design. This will include connecting CED graduate students with GSE graduate students (including those in the Principals Leadership Institute and the Superintendent’s program) through the above mentioned symposium, creation of a future cross-listed course, and providing the Center as a forum to encourage collaborative research projects.
